A-Visiting

My parents left this morning and I am back to regular life (which means, I am at work). Taking a very quick break from catching up on work stuff to post a few pictures. We had a marvelous time together. Yesterday we went down to San Diego and visited Shamu among our other animal friends at Sea World and then ate a very memorable dinner at George’s in La Jolla. Best halibut I have ever had AND! we saw a group of dolphins swimming right below us. I love my mom & dad.

After a vacation

Classically, the day after we got back from Mexico, I started in on the busiest stretch of the summer. Our library hosted a conference for fifty-five Seventh-Day Adventists for five days then I attended the annual conference of the American Library Association (25,000 librarians).

I am tired. But! Look at the stacks of free books I hauled out of the Anaheim Convention Center! On the last day of the conference, I picked up my parents from the airport and they are here with us for a week. Luckily, they are less demanding than large groups of librarians. We are going to the Hollywood Bowl tomorrow night and Sea World on Sunday. Good times.

Babymoon?

Everyone keeps asking me if we’re going on a "babymoon."

You know, like a honeymoon, but before the baby, instead of after the wedding. Ick. I abhor the word but can totally get behind the premise. A reason to go on vacation? I’ll take it.

So we’re heading out to Cancun this weekend and a week of relaxing by the pool and/or ocean sounds pretty good about now. I think Telfer needs a vacation more than I do. He’s had a stressful couple of months. In case you care, the books I am taking are listed on the right-hand side of the blog. We’ll see how far I get.

Fellowship update

Here’s the big news around here this week: Telfer accepted a fellowship position in cardiothoracic anesthesia at Columbia University. Which means, in about one year, we will be moving to NYC for one year. Really, what could be better? Cate will be a California baby and a New York baby – all before she’s one! God is good.

Telfer also interviewed at Mass General in Boston for a cardiac fellowship this week but they won’t make any decisions until the end of July. He had less than two weeks to accept the offer at Columbia…and his wife would have been traumatized for life if the decision had gone the other way. Well, that’s a slight exaggeration, but not much. Honestly, Telfer liked both programs but the idea of living in New York [close to Eleanor!! – yes, she deserves TWO exclamation points although she’ll say two exclamation points is excessive in the extreme] for one year swayed him towards Columbia.

Nerdily, we are already planning out our adventurous year. I’ll spare you most of the details, but we think we’ll live on the Upper West Side, maybe in a studio (just to see if we can do it). Another bonus: Molly, my best friend from high school, lives in Brooklyn with her boyfriend Ryan, another friend from high school. So really, we have at least three friends in a city of 8.2 million people. That’s a definite start.

Before Telfer was even offered the position at Columbia, I had this little gift purchased and squirreled away in my underwear drawer (I had a good feeling).
